Yakima Valley is a world-famous apple-producing area, but peaches, pears and cherries are also grown there. It is also gaining recognition for outstanding vineyards and quality wines. Local farmers also grow hops, corn and beans. Several food processing plants---Tree Top, Snokist, Borton & Sons and Washington Beef Processing--- are located there. Other industries include the manufacture of food packaging machinery, aircraft parts and forest products. In 1994 Yakima was named an “All-American City” by the National Civic League.
Winery hopping in the Yakima Valley is an unforgettable journey of delightful discovery. Across this sun-soaked region, magnificent vineyards, trellises laden with rich grape varietals, lie in the same latitude as the great wine producing regions of France.
The Yakima Valley Community College and the Perry Technical Institute offer higher education opportunities.
